Introduction to Self Care

self care /ˌselfˈker/ noun

  1. The practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health.
  2. The practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.
    • “expressing oneself is an essential form of self-care”

You are busy. You are stressed. You have obstacles standing in your way that you fight hard to overcome every day. The struggle is real, and you are taking it all on like a rock star. BUT – even rock stars have to stop and focus on themselves sometimes.

Don’t fall into the trap of forgetting about yourself! Self care is not selfish. Self care is self LOVE. Self care is essential for keeping yourself balanced so you can keep up with your rock star lifestyle.

Self care is not a specific set of steps or activities that you must preform at a specific time for an allotted amount of time. Instead, self care is all about YOU. You can define what your self care routine looks like. You can decide which activities make YOU feel good, refreshed, and ready to face your day.

Karma for Health’s Tub Teas provide many benefits, including stress reduction, mood improvement, detoxification, pH balance restoration, and skin restoration.

My personal self care routine always includes a long soak in a hot bath (minimum once a week, more if I can squeeze it in). When I feel stressed or overwhelmed, a hot bath with my favorite essential oils makes the drama melt away. When my body is tight and my muscles are sore, the Epsom salts and herbs drain the tension from my body. When my confidence is waning and my self esteem is slipping, the ground oatmeal and arrowroot powder revitalize my skin and give me my glow back. Karma for Health Tub Teas were born out of this tradition.

Here are some more self care ideas that you can easily incorporate into your daily/weekly routine:

  1. Take a shower – don’t rush, enjoy the break and focus on breathing
  2. Make a phone call – use your phone-a-friend lifeline and catch up
  3. Guided meditation – mindfulness asks you to focus on here & now
  4. Read – pick a light & fun book or magazine and escape reality for a bit
  5. Move your body – get out of your chair & move, it doesn’t matter how
  6. Waste time – watch your favorite show or take a nap, guilt-free!
  7. Find a flow – immerse yourself in a favorite activity & get lost
  8. Stand up straight – grandma was right, feel stronger, more confident, taller, and more energized immediately
  9. Write it down – get nagging thoughts out of your head & onto paper
  10. Do something that got you psyched as a kid – the last time you felt deliriously happy and carefree? I’ll bet it was when you were a kid!
  11. Say no – this one is crucial, don’t double book or overextend yourself
  12. Delegate – pass jobs on to others when you can – have Karma for Health send your gifts to friends & family for you!

As you can see, there are a plethora of ways to practice self care. Some of them you may be doing already and didn’t realize it. Try them again with the intention of loving yourself – you’ll notice a difference in the outcome when you set out with intention.
